Outstanding Volunteer
From time to time, an individual Chapter member is presented with the Outstanding Volunteer Award. This is presented to an individual that goes far above and beyond normal volunteer activities on behalf of the Chapter, either through ongoing efforts or a particular project. Please read on to learn more about our most recent recipient.
Angela Brockman, of Cairncross & Hempelmann, P.S., was chosen as the PSALA Outstanding Volunteer award for 2008-2009! Angela has consistently been an outstanding volunteer for PSALA. She is a contributing member on the Visibility, Website, Nominating and Managing Partners Dinner Committees, in addition to being the Director of Membership Services from 2007-2009. Over the past year, Angela's work on the Membership Committee created the highest increase in membership of all 100 ALA chapters. She came up with ideas to increase membership by offering free memberships to independent members, many of whom joined as paying members the following year. Angela was also determined to retain and reenergize our seasoned members. She determined which members had not attended events for some time and set up phone trees to make contact with them. She invited them to attend our upcoming meetings and social events. With that personal contact, we definitely had an increase in attendance at meetings and events of members who had not been able to attend regularly in the past. Angela is consistent in her determination to do an outstanding job in her office and for our Chapter. Angela always comes through for PSALA and we thank her for all of her excellent work this year.
Outstanding Volunteer, 2007-2008
Richard Wood,of Summit Law Group, PLLC, was presented with the Outstanding Volunteer Award at our annual Volunteer Recognition luncheon in March 2008. Richard has been a member of our Chapter since 2004 and has contributed to its success in countless ways. Continue reading to find out some of the things his Chapter colleagues have said about him. You'll quickly see how fitting this award truly is for Richard.
Richard is dedicated to ALA and actively practices and promotes its mission and goals. He has served on nearly every committee, is loyal to the true spirit of ALA, to the sharing of knowledge as well as to the growth of the Chapter and the organization, and has a high ethical standard necessary for leadership. Richard continues to take on substantial roles in the Chapter and always follows through on what he says he is going to do. He consistently exceeds expectations by going above and beyond the call of duty.
What other colleagues say about why they nominated Richard:
- For his endless enthusiasm and for thinking outside the box and coming up with new and innovative ideas
- It seems that, no matter what the function, Richard is either involved in planning it, announcing it, or both
- I doubt if there's a PSALA committee that he is not either a member or involved in some fashion
- He exemplifies the ALA volunteer spirit
- Richard has jumped in with both feet. I'm not sure I can imagine anyone else devoting so much time and enthusiasm to the Chapter.
- For his work on the ALA 2008 Annual Conference Local Arrangements Committee alone
- He's responsible for creating the new PSALA website
- Richard has been instrumental in single-handedly developing the "green" mobile guide for the upcoming Annual Conference in Seattle. This is likely to be a model for ALA to build upon for future annual conferences.
- He has taken the Finance Section to a new level, has been actively involved in the Visibility Committee, Web Committee, Vendor Relations Committee, Community Service Committee, and has been assisting with Chapter communication duties.
