About the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators

The Puget Sound Chapter was founded in 1975 with a small group of administrators who met once a month for a brown bag lunch in the old Seafirst Building. The group learned later about the national ALA organization, which had formed just four years before in 1971. The group started the ALA "Seattle Chapter" with Ray Van Asten of Davis, Wright & Jones serving as the Chapter's first President.

The initial 15 Chapter members grew to 30-40 members over the next several years. The name changed to the "Puget Sound Chapter" and today includes over 240 members working for private law firms, corporate legal departments and various government entities located throughout the state of Washington.

The Puget Sound Chapter and the role of its Board similarly evolved. The initial handful of officers multiplied into many committees and sections in order to attend to the demands of a healthy and active organization. Today we have over 40 members on the Extended Board and 80 volunteers under the President's leadership. That's over 34% of our Chapter membership, supporting our mission and goals through volunteer activities.
