Position: Director of Human Resources & Operations

Job Summary: The Director of Human Resources & Operations (DHRO) manages the day-to-day operations of the law firm, reporting directly to the Shareholders (i.e., the firm’s law partners). The DHRO leads and fosters SGB’s positive work culture, ensures employees are operating at their highest potential, and drives the firm’s strategic goals. This is a full-time, exempt position.


• Promote a workplace of respect and inclusion; support employee engagement and development; organize firm meetings and events to build community and honor employee contributions.

• Serve as a trusted HR advisor, mentor, and coach to all employees; oversee employee onboarding; identify employee training/development needs; assess employee productivity and performance; conduct annual reviews for direct reports and litigation staff; maintain personnel files; assist Shareholders to conduct attorney performance reviews.

• Directly supervise the firm’s administrative team (5-6 employees).

• Lead the firm’s Executive, Marketing, and Technology Committees: facilitate the meetings; prepare agendas; support and coordinate the committees’ work; develop priorities and measure success against the firm’s strategic goals.

• Develop recruitment and retention strategies to attract, hire, and support employees from diverse backgrounds.

• Identify inefficiencies in the firm’s workflow and strategize improvements; manage the process of staffing cases to promote equitable distribution of workload.

• Partner with SGB’s Director of Finance to plan and implement the firm’s budget; provide input to Shareholders on employee compensation levels to ensure equity and foster retention.

• Plan external events to deepen community connections and enhance the SGB brand.

• Implement and update firm-wide personnel policies and procedures; ensure compliance with employment laws.

• Manage relationships with the firm’s marketing, technology, and facility vendors.

• Provide senior staff support for Shareholder meetings and retreats.

• Plan for the firm’s space needs.

• Salary range of $125,000 – $175,000, depending on experience

Reporting Relationships

The DHRO reports directly to SGB’s Shareholders, with one Shareholder as primary supervisor. The DHRO has between five and six direct reports, including one administrative assistant; and partners with the Shareholders to manage approximately 20 litigation support staff.

Location & Schedule

SGB’s main office is in downtown Seattle on the 34th floor of the new Rainier Square Building at 401 Union. Most of our employees work a hybrid, flexible schedule, though some admin staff are in the office every day. At least initially, we would expect the DHRO to work in the downtown office four days/week, with one day remote, depending on the firm’s needs. We anticipate that the opportunity for remote work and overall flexibility of hours to increase as the DHRO becomes more established at the firm. Occasional work should be expected during evening hours and on weekends, such as for firm events or retreats.
